WIKI spaces

I am really starting to like the idea of creating WIKI spaces to enhance student learning I found numerous sites including this one which allows you to create your own! I read an article for the another subject that explained the benefits of using WIKIS to collaborate information. For my unit plan I have used WIKI to store information and to allow peers to give feedback. I think children would really enjoy this as long as it is monitored well!

Trying to the find the motivation

Assignment one is due today and I am trying to find the motivation to finish it off. During the assignment I have found it much easier to think of ways of incorporating ideas into my learning experiences. Assignment 1 for this subject and also the Essay I had to write for another subject, has given me many ideas for using ICT to help create rich learning experiences. I can look back at where I was in first year and see an enormous growth has happened. I have developed so many new innovative ideas and for this I am grateful.

Anyway enough for now, I need to stop procrastinating.

Some keep up some fall behind…

I was reading through some blogs about the Easter break and came across this one titled “no rest for the wicked”. Assignment one was done and dusted and now we are straight into assignment two, as well as preparing for a quiz I have this weekend for another subject. As I have been stressing about completing my assignments on time I started to think about how more time consuming it would be if we had to write all of our assignments on paper! When my dad was here a few weeks ago he was writing out a whole assignment for TAFE on paper!!! I thought “this man is mad”. I asked him why on earth would he not just type it up? His reply was simple “it would take too long”. WHAT?? I said. Then he explained that for him to type it would be double as long as if he were to write it! My mum on the other hand can touch type and much prefers the computer and they are the same age? Funny how some people keep up with times and some, well simply fall behind…. but do these people who ‘fall behind” see it that way?

Using ICT to help boys with Literacy learning

I just finished an assignment for my literacy subject. We had to read a bunch of articles and then think of a topic to write and essay about. Automatically I was draw to the theme of using ICT’s in the classroom. As I kept reading and researching into using ICT in literacy learning I then stumbled across the topic of boys and literacy. Did you know boys score lower on high stkae literacy tests than girls?

After thinking about this fact for a while and after much research, I came up with a thesis built around the idea of  ICT’s enhancing boys literacy learning. Boys prefer using digital devices in their spare time to reading books, so it only seemed right to incorporate it into literacy learning to help boys engage.

This reading was were I got my initial information on about how boys learn. I then look into the benefits of using ICT’s in literacy and then BAM! It all came together.

Reflecting on the past three weeks

I’ve finally finished my three weeks of study and have just finished reading the “End of Module One” book. The book asks you too think about

1) What is ICT & pedagogy

I have learnt that ICT stands for “Information and Communication Technologies” and that these technologies are used to access, present, manipulate, present and/or communicate information. When I first looked at this idea of ICT I automatically thought of computers, however it is much more than that. Video camera’s, phones, ipods, the internet, interactive online games, are all part of ICT’s and to be successful facilitators of ICT we must use them to access, present, manipulate and so forth.

The possibilities are endless with the ICT and pedagogy. Students are able to communicate with other students from around the world.  They have access to information instantly. When using ICT in our pedagogical approach to teaching a subject, students are motivate to learn as ICT excites them and they are familiar with it and fast learners in it. This also links in to another question of why we should use ICT in the classroom. The world is evolving and technology is having an enormous part. If we don’t use ICT in our pedagogy, we are not preparing our students for the future. No matter if we like it or not, technology will be the way of the future; it is the way of the future and if we hide behind our ignorance we are negatively impacting our students.

Finding a Balance

ImageI was just reading a Blog post by another EDC3100 student titled “How much is too much”. the post asks questions about how much time should our children spend using social networks. This is something I find myself thinking about a lot, even though I don’t have children. When I was a child we spent majority of our play time outside. We loved exploring our couple of acres and would create scenarios in our minds to make exploring more interesting. This was called using our “imagination” something I worry the future generation may forget how to do!

This issue is something that is discussed quite frequently, so I did a bit of research and found an article that talks about finding a balance between playing outdoors and using technology.

This article is definitely worth a read as it does not show bias towards one or the other, however discusses the importance of both and the importance of balancing the two.

I am a strong believer of finding balance through our life, however sometimes this can be harder than it appears.
